Explanation
The retirement age of a Judge of the Supreme Court of India is 65 years.
According to Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India, a person appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court shall hold office until he/she attains the age of 65 years. This provision was amended in 2019 to increase the retirement age of the Chief Justice of India from 64 years to 65 years.
It is important to note that the retirement age of judges in India varies depending on the level of the judiciary. The retirement age for High Court judges is also 62-65 years depending on the state, while the retirement age for subordinate court judges is generally 60 years.
The purpose of setting a retirement age for judges is to ensure that there is a regular turnover of judges and to maintain the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The retirement age also provides an opportunity for new judges to be appointed, bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to the judiciary.
