The appointment of Judges of the Supreme Court of India is done by the President of India on the recommendation of the Chief Justice of India.
The procedure for the appointment of judges of the Supreme Court is prescribed under Article 124 of the Constitution of India. According to this article, the President of India appoints the judges of the Supreme Court after consultation with such judges of the High Courts and the Supreme Court as he deems necessary. However, the consultation with the Chief Justice of India is mandatory in the matter of appointment of the judges of the Supreme Court.
The recommendation for the appointment of judges of the Supreme Court is made by the Chief Justice of India and a collegium consisting of the four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court. The recommendation of the collegium is binding on the President.
