Explanation
The capital of India was shifted from Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) to New Delhi in 1911. The decision to shift the capital was announced by King George V during his visit to India in December 1911. New Delhi was planned and built as a new capital city to replace Calcutta, which had served as the capital of British India since the 1770s. The official inauguration of New Delhi as the capital of India took place on February 13, 1931.
