The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was actually founded in Melbourne, Australia in the year 2007. The campaign is a global civil society coalition that aims to promote the total elimination of nuclear weapons through advocacy and awareness-raising activities. ICAN has played a key role in efforts to negotiate and adopt the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was approved by the United Nations in 2017.
