Explanation
The first European to land in India in 1498 was Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer who sailed from Lisbon, Portugal, with a small fleet of ships in search of a sea route to India. After a long and perilous voyage, Vasco da Gama and his crew landed in the port of Calicut (present-day Kozhikode) in the southwestern coast of India. This historic event marked the beginning of a new era of European exploration and colonization of India, which lasted for several centuries and had a profound impact on the history, culture, and society of India.
