Explanation
Tort means a breach of some duty independent of contract giving rise to a civil cause of action for which compensation is recoverable. A civil injury for which an action for damages will not lie is not a tort. Tort law is there to make the people adhere to the reasonable and appropriate behaviour that is expected of them. It is there to make people respect the rights of other people around them. Hence, a tort is a violation of a right in rem which means that the right is vested in some person and is available against the world at large.
