The Act was enacted by the Indian Parliament to prohibit the giving or taking of dowry, which is a social practice in which gifts or valuables are demanded or given by the bride's family to the groom's family before, during, or after the wedding. The Dowry Prohibition Act aims to prevent the dowry system and the associated social issues and abuses.
