Explanation
The Constituent Assembly of India was formed under the provision of the Cabinet Mission Plan.
In 1946, the British government sent a Cabinet Mission to India to discuss and plan for the transfer of power from British rule to Indian leadership. The Cabinet Mission proposed a plan for the creation of a Constituent Assembly, which would be responsible for drafting the Constitution of India.
The Constituent Assembly was to be made up of representatives from all the provinces and princely states of India. The members of the Assembly were to be elected by the provincial assemblies and nominated by the princely states.
The Cabinet Mission Plan was accepted by the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, and the Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946. The Assembly held its first meeting on December 9, 1946, and was chaired by Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha, the oldest member of the Assembly.
The Constitution of India was eventually adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking the transition of India from a British colony to an independent republic.
